Poço Redondo lies in the semi-arid sertão of Sergipe, in the north-west of the state near the São Francisco River. From above, the town is compact, a small grid of streets around its centre surrounded by dry, open country. Roads lead out across the plain toward the river and neighbouring towns, and the built-up area ends abruptly where the scrubland begins.
The municipality reaches down to the São Francisco, which here runs through a deep, rocky valley on its way to the sea and forms the border with Alagoas. On a wider map, the river's sweeping course and the tracks running down toward it give the region a strong, directional shape that the town itself lacks.
The municipality also contains the Grota do Angico, the ravine where the cangaceiro Lampião and members of his band were killed in 1938.
