Dewsbury Map Poster & Print
Dewsbury sits in the Calder valley in West Yorkshire, where the river runs past the south of the town centre. The ground rises steeply from the valley, and the streets respond. Terraces follow the contours, roads climb in sweeping curves, and the town spreads over several hillsides with valley-floor industry below.
In the nineteenth century Dewsbury was a centre of the heavy woollen district, famous for shoddy and mungo: cloth made from recycled wool rags. The trade built the town's large Victorian warehouses and civic buildings. The minster, at the old heart of the town, is on one of the oldest church sites in the region.
A Dewsbury map poster shows the contours through the streets themselves. You can see the dense core near the river, the terraces curving along the hills and the railway line crossing the valley. In black and white, the relief comes through without any shading.

Hillside terraces
Rows of terraced houses follow the steep slopes. Their curving, parallel lines are the most characteristic pattern on the map.
Minster quarter
The historic church stands near the river end of the town centre. It marks the point where the oldest streets gather.
