Al-Junaynah, also written El Geneina, is the capital of West Darfur and lies close to Sudan’s border with Chad. The town sits on an open, dry plain. A broad seasonal wadi runs past it, flowing briefly after the summer rains and otherwise dry as a sandy bed. On a map it is the most distinctive natural line.
The town was historically the seat of the Masalit sultanate, and it grew as a market and administrative centre for the western borderlands.
