Atamaría is in the far south-east of the Region of Murcia, in the municipality of Cartagena. It sits on a strip of land where the shallow lagoon of the Mar Menor meets the higher, rockier coast facing the Mediterranean. On a map the area has little of the grid you see in older Spanish towns.
