Winding main roads
Hills force the principal roads into long curves, giving the poster flowing lines that contrast with the rigid grids of flatter cities.

Bake Map Poster & Print
Bake is a town in Chongqing, the vast municipality in southwest China known for steep hills and deep river valleys. The landscape shapes almost everything here: roads rarely run straight for long, and the built-up area settles where the ground allows it, following valleys and gentler slopes.
On a map this produces an irregular, organic street pattern. Main roads wind to link the town with neighbouring settlements, while smaller lanes climb and turn between clusters of buildings. Terraced farmland and wooded hills surround the centre, leaving open space around the densest lines.
A Bake map poster is a quiet portrait of the Chongqing countryside rather than its famous skyline. For anyone whose family comes from the town, or who lived and worked here, the curving lines hold a sense of the terrain that no photograph of a single street could.

Terrain-led settlement
Buildings cluster where the ground is kinder, so the densest part of the map traces the shape of valleys and slopes rather than a planned plan.
Surrounding countryside
Open space around the town reflects the farmland and hills of rural Chongqing, framing the centre as a compact knot of streets.
