In Papiamentu, Banda Riba means the upper side and refers to the eastern part of Curaçao, beyond the capital Willemstad. The area around these coordinates lies between the eastern outskirts of the city and the south coast. From above, residential streets wind across low, dry hills, and the shoreline breaks into bays and sheltered inlets.
One of the most distinctive features of this side of the island is the Spaanse Water, a large, branching inland bay connected to the sea by a narrow channel.
