Cathedral quarter
The Saint-Étienne cathedral occupies a large block at the top of the old town. The streets around it tighten and bend, following the outline of the former fortifications.

Bourges Map Poster & Print
Bourges was the historic capital of the Berry region in central France. It sits on a low rise where the Yèvre and Auron rivers meet. From above, the old town is an oval of narrow, winding streets. Its outline still follows the line of the ancient walls, and later boulevards trace the edge where the ramparts once stood.
The Cathedral of Saint-Étienne dominates the centre. It is a Gothic building of unusual width, with no transept, and it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Nearby is the palace of Jacques Cœur, the fifteenth-century merchant and royal financier, one of the finest secular buildings of its time. Each spring, the city hosts the Printemps de Bourges music festival.
Just below the old town lie the Marais de Bourges. These marshes are small garden plots divided by channels and still worked by hand. On a Bourges map poster they appear as a fine mesh of water lines beside the dense medieval core, making the city look quite unlike any other French prefecture.

Marais de Bourges
Just north of the centre, canals and ditches divide the land into many small allotments. They create an intricate grid that looks almost woven on the printed map.
Ring of boulevards
Wide roads loop around the historic centre where the walls once stood. Together they draw a clear boundary between the medieval city and the later districts beyond.

Bourges appeals to lovers of Gothic architecture, to festival-goers who return every April, and to anyone with roots in Berry. The map shows a medieval street plan and a working marshland together, which makes it a quietly unusual picture of a French town.
Personalise the title and subtitle, and adjust the coordinates line for a particular street or house if you like. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Paper or Blueprint suit the fine detail of the marshes well.
