Chivacoa lies in the Yaracuy valley in north-western Venezuela, a fertile landscape of plantations, farmland and forested mountains. From above the town reads as a compact grid of streets on flat ground, with blocks that loosen toward the edges into smaller settlements and fields. The town is best known as the gateway to Cerro María Lionza, the mountain of Sorte, which is the main pilgrimage site of the María Lionza religious tradition.
