Delmenhorst lies in Lower Saxony directly southwest of Bremen, separated from the larger city by the Ochtum lowlands and the city boundary. The small Delme river winds through the town from south to north, and on the map its curving course and the green corridors along its banks give structure to an otherwise dense, flat urban area.
In the late nineteenth century Delmenhorst became an industrial town, known above all for the Nordwolle wool-combing works and for linoleum production.
