The Kokcha river
The river runs through the middle of town, carving the valley that the whole settlement follows. It is the backbone of the map.

Fayzabad Map Poster & Print
Fayzabad is the capital of Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan. It lies in the valley of the Kokcha river, surrounded by steep mountains. The map shows how much the terrain limits the town. Streets and houses follow the narrow valley floor and the lower slopes, and they stretch along the river rather than spreading out.
As the main town of Badakhshan, Fayzabad is the administrative and trading centre for a remote, mountainous region. The province extends towards the Pamirs and the Wakhan corridor. The Kokcha flows through town on its way to the Amu Darya, and the valley has long served as a route through the mountains.
A Fayzabad map poster is a study in constraint. The river takes the centre of the frame, the built area traces its banks and the empty mountain slopes press in from both sides. The result is long and narrow. It is shaped almost entirely by water and rock, and it shows the character of a highland valley town.

Valley-floor streets
The streets line the narrow flat ground beside the river, creating a long, thin built-up area rather than a compact grid.
Mountain walls
Steep slopes rise on both sides of the valley and leave broad empty areas that frame the town on the map.
