Guilford's map has a clear centre. The large town green is one of the most notable in New England, and the rest of the map is organised around it. The historic streets reach out from the green toward the shore and inland toward low wooded hills. The town was founded in 1639, and its streets are unusually well preserved. The Henry Whitfield House dates from the town's first years and is often cited as the oldest stone house in Connecticut.
