Herzogenrath lies in the far west of North Rhine-Westphalia, north of Aachen, directly on the Dutch border. The small River Wurm runs through the town in a green valley, and the built-up area spreads over the slopes on both sides. On a map, the town merges seamlessly with Kerkrade in the Netherlands, with no visible break in the street pattern.
The two towns share the Neustraße, or Nieuwstraat, a street whose centre line once marked the border.
