Rhine harbour basins
Long rectangular docks run inland from the river. Their strong industrial geometry sets Neuss apart from its neighbour across the water.

Neuss Map Poster & Print
Neuss sits on the west bank of the Rhine directly opposite Düsseldorf, and its map is defined by its relationship with the river. The Erft flows in from the south-west to join the Rhine here. Between the old town and the main stream lie long, straight harbour basins, part of one of the busiest inland port systems in the region.
The city traces its origins to Novaesium, a Roman military camp established around 16 BC, which makes it one of the oldest towns in Germany. The medieval centre keeps its compact outline around the Quirinus-Münster, a large Romanesque basilica. The Obertor, a surviving city gate, still marks where the old walls once stood.
A Neuss map poster shows the historic core, the port's parallel docks and the broad sweep of the Rhine, with the bridges leading over to Düsseldorf. Around them, the later districts extend in a looser network of streets toward the fields of the Lower Rhine plain. The result is a composition that is both urban and open.

Old town core
The compact medieval centre gathers around the Quirinus-Münster. Its streets are tighter and more irregular than anything in the surrounding districts.
Erft meets Rhine
The smaller Erft winds through the city before reaching the Rhine, adding a second, gentler river line alongside the broad main stream.

Neuss is often overshadowed by the state capital across the river, which is exactly why a map of it feels personal. It shows the town people actually live in, with its old centre, its docks and its neighbourhoods by the Erft, as a place with its own shape and some two thousand years of history.
