Jaén is a city in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru, on the Amazonian side of the Andes in the wider Marañón basin. Unlike many Andean towns, it sits relatively low, in a warm valley, and on a map it appears as a compact street grid spreading along the valley floor with steep, folded ground rising around it.
The surrounding province is one of Peru's major coffee-growing areas, and the city serves as a market and service centre for farms in the hills.
