Jianshui lies in a basin in southern Yunnan, in the Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture, and its old town is one of the best preserved in the province. The old east gate, Chaoyang Tower, dates from the late fourteenth century and still stands at the head of the main street.
