Yuxi lies about ninety kilometres south of Kunming, in a highland basin of central Yunnan. The urban core, Hongta district, fills the flat valley floor, and the surrounding mountains hold it in place. The map therefore shows a compact city with a clear outline rather than endless sprawl.
