Kaltan lies in the south of Kemerovo Oblast, the coal-mining region of Siberia known as the Kuzbass. The town grew in the twentieth century around the Yuzhno-Kuzbasskaya power station and is still closely tied to energy and mining. On the map it looks exactly like what it is: a compact industrial town shaped by its plant, its river and its hills.
The Kondoma River curves past the town, and the houses and streets follow its valley. In the centre, Soviet-era apartment blocks stand in straight rows around courtyards, while older districts of wooden houses spread out in smaller, looser plots.
