Karur sits on the plains of western Tamil Nadu, where the Amaravathi River flows north to meet the Kaveri. From above, the town grows out from the south bank of the Amaravathi. Its older core packs short lanes tightly around the temple district, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward along the roads to Tiruchirappalli, Salem, Dindigul and Erode.
Karur is one of the oldest continuously inhabited places in the region and appears in early Tamil literature as a Chera centre. Today it is best known for its home textiles.
