Kislovodsk lies in a basin in the northern foothills of the Caucasus, where the Olkhovka and Berezovka rivers meet. The name refers to the naturally carbonated, slightly sour water of the Narzan springs, which made the town one of the best-known resorts of the Russian Empire.
