Vladikavkaz grew from a Russian fortress founded in 1784 where the Terek River leaves the mountains. The name means roughly 'ruler of the Caucasus', and the setting explains it. The city stands at the northern gate of the range, where the Georgian Military Road begins its climb toward the Darial Gorge and Tbilisi.
On a map the Terek runs north through the middle of town, crossed by a series of bridges, and the historic centre is laid out in a regular grid along its banks.
