Kranj lies in the Gorenjska region of Slovenia, north of Ljubljana, with the Alps rising to the north. Its old town has one of the most distinctive sites in the country. It stands on a narrow rocky promontory at the confluence of the Sava and the Kokra, which has cut a deep canyon along the eastern side of the old centre.
On the map, the old town appears as a narrow, elongated wedge of streets pointing south toward where the rivers meet. The motorway and railway run past in long lines, and Ljubljana's airport sits a short distance away.
