Ksar is one of the districts of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, and it is where the city began. Before Nouakchott was chosen as the capital around independence, a small ksar, or fortified settlement, stood here. On the modern map, Ksar is a part of the regular city grid, with blocks laid out on flat, sandy ground a few kilometres inland from the Atlantic.
For decades the district was home to the city's international airport. The runway still shows on the map as a long, straight strip, one of the largest single shapes in the city, and the open land around it separates Ksar from neighbouring districts.
