Leiden's old centre is one of the most recognisable shapes in the Netherlands. A continuous moat, the Singelgracht, surrounds it in an angular outline that follows the line of former fortifications, and inside that ring the branches of the Oude Rijn and a web of smaller canals divide the city into islands, quays and narrow streets.
At the heart of it stands the Burcht, a medieval motte raised on a mound where two arms of the Rhine meet.
