Rotterdam Map Poster & Print
Seen from above, Rotterdam is organised by water. The Nieuwe Maas runs through the middle of the city, and to the west the harbour basins cut into the land like the teeth of a comb, one after another, as far as the reclaimed Maasvlakte on the coast. This is one of the largest ports in Europe, and the map shows it plainly.
The centre looks different from most Dutch cities. The bombing of May 1940 destroyed much of the old core, and the rebuilt streets are wider and straighter, with long avenues such as the Coolsingel. South of the river, the Kop van Zuid district sits on former docks, reached by the single angled pylon of the Erasmus Bridge.

What is left is a city of rivers, quays and postwar blocks, with the dense residential grids north of the centre giving way to the wide open geometry of the port.
