Santa Cruz de Lorica lies in Colombia's Córdoba Department, on the Sinú River, a short distance before the river reaches the Caribbean. On a map, the Sinú is the dominant element: a broad, meandering band along which the old town was laid out. Streets run parallel to the bank, with others crossing toward the water.
Beyond the town, the land is flat and wet. To the east lies the large Ciénaga Grande de Lorica, a lagoon and marsh system that appears as a wide area of water and floodplain.
