Luojing is in Baoshan District, on the northern edge of Shanghai, on the south bank of the Yangtze estuary. The river is so wide here that it looks almost like the sea, with Chongming Island on the other side. On the map, the shoreline forms a long, straight edge, lined with docks, embankments and industrial areas.
Like many towns in the Yangtze Delta, Luojing has an old centre dating from the time when life depended on canals and small rivers.
