Matosinhos lies on the Atlantic coast just north of Porto, where the Leça river reaches the sea. From above, the city is defined by its waterfront. There are the broad breakwaters of the port of Leixões, a long sandy beach running south, and a dense grid of streets behind it that runs straight into Porto's northern neighbourhoods.
Leixões is one of the largest seaports in Portugal, and its basins and piers take up the northern part of the map.
