Nicoya is the main town of the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste. Unlike the beach towns on the coast, it sits inland on a plain ringed by low hills. Its map is centred and orderly. A grid of blocks surrounds a central park, and roads leave the town toward the Pacific coast and the rest of the peninsula.
At the heart of the grid stands the colonial church of San Blas, among the oldest churches in Costa Rica, facing the town's main park. The blocks around it are regular and fairly small.
