Oshawa runs north from the shore of Lake Ontario, and the lake gives the map a clean, nearly straight southern edge. Behind it, the city is set out on a broad grid of concession roads that dates from early land surveys. Wooded creek valleys, including Oshawa Creek, run south to the lake.
