Oyonnax lies in the Haut-Bugey, among the folded ridges of the southern Jura. On the map the town is stretched lengthwise, its streets crowded onto the valley floor and climbing only a little way up the slopes. The contour of the land decides the plan: long roads along the valley, short steep lanes across it, and forest pressing in on both sides.
The town built its name on making things. Combs came first, carved and later moulded from celluloid, and plastics followed, which is why the surrounding area is still called Plastics Vallée.
