Ōzu lies east of Kumamoto city, on the gradually rising land that leads toward the Aso volcanic region. Ōzu is known for a stretch of the old Bungo Kaidō, the historic road from Kumamoto toward the east coast of Kyushu, which is lined with tall cedar trees.
