Seen from above, Pataskala looks more like a stretch of countryside than a compact town. Long, straight rural roads divide the land into large rectangles, and the blocks between them fill in with farm fields, tree lines and scattered cul-de-sac neighbourhoods. The older centre is a tighter cluster of short streets. Beyond it, the map opens out quickly into the wide, regular pattern typical of central Ohio.
Pataskala sits in Licking County, east of Columbus. The historic National Road, now US 40, crosses the area from east to west, and Interstate 70 runs to the south.
