Riehen is one of only three municipalities in the canton of Basel-City. It lies northeast of Basel, and its map shows an unusual position. The German border wraps around it on most sides, so the municipal outline looks like a peninsula of Swiss territory reaching into Baden-Württemberg. The river Wiese runs along its western side on its way to the Rhine.
The old village core sits at the centre, with a church and historic buildings, and a tram line connects it directly to Basel.
