San Jose fills much of the flat floor of the Santa Clara Valley, at the southern end of San Francisco Bay. On the map, a grid of long, straight streets stretches across the valley, cut by freeways such as 101, 280, 680 and 880. The city was founded in 1777 as the Pueblo de San José de Guadalupe, the first civilian settlement in Spanish California. Its downtown is small and compact, sitting beside the Guadalupe River, and the airport lies unusually close to the centre, a long, clean shape just to the north.
