Sohar lies on the Batinah coast of northern Oman, where a flat plain runs between the Gulf of Oman and the Hajar Mountains. On a map the city stretches along the shore rather than inland. A coastal road runs parallel to the beach, with a band of date-palm plantations and walled gardens behind it.
