Sokhumi lies on the Black Sea coast of Abkhazia, on a wide bay backed by the foothills of the Caucasus. The map is organised by the shoreline. A long seafront road and promenade follow the curve of the bay, and the city centre spreads out behind them in a fairly regular grid, before the streets begin to climb and bend as the ground rises inland.
The city's botanical garden, founded in the nineteenth century, is one of the oldest in the Caucasus, and its green area stands out near the centre.
