St. Catharines is the largest city in Ontario's Niagara Region, on the south shore of Lake Ontario. On a map, several strong lines cross it. The Welland Canal runs north–south along the eastern side, carrying ships between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie around Niagara Falls.
