Stavanger occupies the tip of a peninsula in south-western Norway, with the Gandsfjord to the east, the Hafrsfjord to the west and the wide Boknafjord opening to the north. Its map is a lacework of coastline: inlets, small harbours and a scatter of islands linked to the city by bridges.
