It lies lower than much of the Ethiopian highlands, in hilly terrain covered by forest, farms and plantations. From above, the town appears as a loose network of streets gathered along the main road, with neighbourhoods spreading into the surrounding green wherever the ground allows.
The area is closely tied to coffee. Ethiopia is the homeland of arabica coffee, and the forests of the south-west still hold wild coffee plants.
