Tepic, the capital of Nayarit, lies in an upland valley inland from the Pacific coast of western Mexico. The Sangangüey volcano rises to the south-east, and lower hills surround the rest of the basin. From above, the city looks like a pale patch of streets set into a green, folded landscape, with farmland reaching right to its edges.
The historic centre keeps a regular colonial grid around its main plaza and cathedral, and the blocks get smaller toward the core. The Mololoa River runs along the eastern side of the city.
