Tequixquiac lies in the State of Mexico, north of Mexico City, near the edge of the basin that holds the capital. The town occupies uneven ground, and on the map its streets bend with the terrain, gathering around a central core with a church and plaza and spreading outward along roads to neighbouring communities. The town has an unusual place in history. It gave its name to the Tequixquiac sacrum, a carved animal bone discovered in the nineteenth century and considered one of the earliest known works of art in the Americas.
