Teutônia lies in the Vale do Taquari in central Rio Grande do Sul, on rolling land east of the Taquari River. It has no single dense centre. Instead it is made up of several districts linked by roads that wind across hills and farmland. The name reflects the German immigrants who settled the area in the nineteenth century, and their influence still shows in local architecture, surnames and traditions.
