Thala lies in the Kasserine Governorate of west-central Tunisia, on the high ground of the Tunisian Dorsal, and is often described as one of the highest towns in the country, at around a thousand metres above sea level. From above, it is a compact settlement of low houses and short streets, with a few main roads leading out across dry, open hills.
The surrounding area is known for its marble, quarried in the hills near town and used in buildings across Tunisia. Thala also has a place in recent history: in the winter of 2010 and 2011 it was one of the interior towns where protests spread early during the Tunisian revolution.
