Tosno lies in Leningrad Oblast, southeast of St Petersburg, on the main transport corridor to Moscow. The town's layout follows two strong lines: the railway between the two capitals and the highway running parallel to it. Between and around them, residential districts, apartment blocks and private houses fill the flat ground, while the Tosna river winds through the town in loose curves.
The river gives the town its name and its only natural curves on an otherwise level, forested landscape. Tosno is also the centre of its district, and much of its growth has come from its position on this route.
