Vrbas lies in the Bačka region of Vojvodina in northern Serbia, on the flat farmland of the Pannonian plain. Like many towns in the region, it was shaped by eighteenth-century settlement under Habsburg rule, and its street plan shows it. Long straight streets, rectangular blocks and wide crossings are all laid out on land flat enough for a clean geometry.
A canal of the Danube–Tisa–Danube system runs through the middle of town and divides Vrbas into two parts joined by bridges.
