Werdohl lies deep in the Sauerland, in the Märkischer Kreis of North Rhine-Westphalia, where the Lenne cuts a narrow valley through forested hills. From above, the town has no grid and no ring. It follows the river. Houses, roads and the railway all fit into the thin strips of flat land the water leaves behind.
On the map the Lenne is the main line. It bends back on itself more than once, so the built-up areas look like several clusters linked by bridges rather than one compact centre.
