Winchester lies in the valley of the River Itchen in Hampshire, and its plan still reflects the Roman and Saxon town beneath it. The High Street runs east to west through the centre, rising from the river crossing towards the Westgate, with smaller streets branching off at intervals. To the south, the cathedral close forms a large, calm open space within the old town.
The city was once the capital of the Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex and is closely associated with King Alfred, whose statue stands at the eastern end of the Broadway.
