Xàtiva lies in the Costera district of Valencia, where a long rocky ridge rises above the plain. The castle runs along its crest, and the historic town spills down the slope beneath it. It was an early centre of paper-making in Europe during the Islamic period, and it was the home of the Borja family, which gave the Church two popes, Callixtus III and Alexander VI.
