Xinqiao lies in Songjiang, on the southwestern side of Shanghai, where the Yangtze delta is almost perfectly flat. From above, the town is a patchwork. Long rectangular factory plots sit beside dense residential compounds, and narrow creeks run between them. Some of these waterways are older than any of the roads, and they still break the grid into irregular pieces.
The larger roads run in straight lines across the plain. They link Xinqiao with the rest of Songjiang and with central Shanghai to the northeast.
