Yurimaguas stands on the banks of the Huallaga River in Loreto, Peru's largest region, which is dominated by rainforest and rivers. It is one of the few places in Loreto that can be reached by road, via the highway that descends from Tarapoto. That makes it a transfer point where travellers and cargo move from trucks to boats.
From Yurimaguas, riverboats head down the Huallaga toward the Marañón and eventually Iquitos, a journey of several days. The city is sometimes called the Pearl of the Huallaga.
